Fête de la musique (celebrated on 21 June every year).

During this festival, anyone who wishes to sing or play an instrument heads for the nearest street corner and exhibits his talent. Concerts are held everywhere and music is in the air the whole day through.

Printemps des Bourges (hosted by the city of Bourges every April)

Started in 1977, the most interesting characteristic of this pop, rock, funk, house, techno festival are the new talents : many famous bands made their first major concerts in Bourges. The appeal of the event is focused on inexpensive tickets and up-and-coming performances. The event is held in the city centre (most events are at walking distance from each other) for 4 to 7 days. Free events: Apart from the numerous food & clothes stalls, there are 3 or 4 open air stages where bands perform for free. Potential performers are permitted to perform on one of the stages with a request only a few days (or hours, depending on availability) in advance. The music played on these stages is often quite varied, and sometimes eclectic. Local bars host bands during the event as well, even though most bars in Bourges are quite modest in size.

Les Francofolies (hosted by the city of La Rochelle every summer)

Started in 1985, this is one of the biggest music festivals in France. Les FrancoFolies takes place each summer in La Rochelle, where Francophone musicians come together for a week of concerts and celebration. 2004 marked the 20th anniversary of this event.
Like in Printemps des Bourges, new talents are welcomed and discovered during this festival which is held over 6 days and nights in 6 different places in the city.
Since 1989 Les Francofolies has gone international heading to places like Québec, Bulgaria, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and even across the Atlantic to Argentina.
To tune in to “la chanson française”, here are some sites you may wish to check out http://www.francemp3.com (permits you to download mp3 music).
